In the spring of 2007, Parsons Roofing contributed a generous amount of money to the Midway ISD Education Foundation. These funds made it possible to finance a grant, Mammal Match Monument, for the Woodway Elementary. This grant was approved for funding because of the creative and innovative approach it has in meeting the students' educational needs.
Mammal Match Monument is designed to involve young children in the scientific process through interaction with a concrete slab that contains impressions of non-domestic mammal bones. This "fossil find" allows students to gather information as well as communicate findings artistically and graphically. The larger bones used in making the Fossil Find were donated by the Baylor Biology Department and the Mayborn Museum. They remain available to support the lessons.
One great thing about Mammal Match Monument is the fact that it allows students to look at learning in a fun, creative way. The learning takes place in a non-traditional setting which permits students to relax and learn in an exciting and interesting way. The mock fossil field allows students to participate in simple field investigations which allow students to learn scientific techniques related to fossil study.
The slab will be utilized for five or more years and it takes little to no maintenance. The slab is available to students during recess time which encourages students, of all grade levels, to explore and study independently. "The students especially liked the large square one with assorted 'imprints' on it. I wish I had brought rebbing items and a small broom with me. We spent quite a time cleaning off the sand and 'naming' the prints. I look forward to using it again," a kindergarden teacher said.
This kindergarden teacher, among many, wishes to help her students develop a basic knowledge and understanding on mammals through this "fossil find." The space of the "fossil find" will be utilized by more than 100 students. The students and faculty are thrilled to have received such an educational and fun gift.
The "fossil find" area was dedicated to Woodway Elementary on Tuesday, October 9. The students were introduced to the area by the "Fairy Garden Mother" and environmental education enthuasist. She explained the different aspects of the garden area and how to recognize fossils in the "fossil find" area.
The project is to help create an asthetically pleasing, educational, and recreational space for the purpose of promoting healthy lifestyle choices for all served in the nearby community. The choice of landscaping materials is designed to give the impression of walking through the major geographical regions of Texas.
Woodway Elementary and the Education Foundation are deeply grateful for the support provided by Parsons Roofing to establish this learning center.
